ESS Lund in Sweden

Early in 2019, Byldis was commissioned to carry out its first project in Scandinavia. In July 2019 we started work on the project for ESS Lund in Sweden.

ESS Lund, also the European Spallation Source, is a multidisciplinary research facility. The building is currently under construction in Lund, Sweden.

The objective of this facility is to build and use the world’s most powerful neutron source. In the research centre, research will be carried out into materials, energy, health and the environment, and into tackling several of the most significant current societal issues. As such, the facility hopes to make scientific breakthroughs possible.
Many research activities in the Netherlands could benefit from participating in the ESS, primarily in the fields of biotechnology, materials science, magnetism, nanotechnology, cultural heritage and chemistry. The ESS Lund campus is home to facilities including laboratories, offices and a lecture hall. The total surface area of the site is around 65,000 m2.

What are we going to do for ESS Lund?

Severfield Europe BV, a steel fabricator from England that we work with as a subcontractor, has commissioned Byldis to produce, supply and install various kinds of precast concrete elements, such as concrete walls, hollow core slab floors, concrete stairs, wide slab floors and hollow walls. Severfield has a contract with Skanska, de main contractor of the project.

A new region

A challenge for Byldis with this ESS Lund project is that the engineering must be completed in a completely new (and unknown) region. We must also meet specific requirements throughout the process, from engineering to delivery. Not only the elements, but also the entire quality plan, including internal and external inspections and various certificates, must meet certain standards. We tackled this challenge by adjusting the organisation to meet the requirements.

A 'small' contribution

We have been working on the installation since July 2019 and we expect to complete the project for ESS Lund in Sweden in June this year. Byldis is only making a small contribution to the whole project. Building activities will actually continue until 2025!

Why are we building ESS?
SSF (Stiftelsen för Strategisk Forskning) has made an interesting video that explains why it is so important that ESS is built. Watch the video below.
