Platform Gevelbouw on the Hourglass project
An interesting publication in the latest edition of Gevelbouw magazine (year 17 – issue 4 from August / September).
Hourglass is a special building in the shape of an 80-metre high hourglass with an unusually large facade of natural stone with very narrow seams. One of the first projects for which Smart Move was commissioned by Byldis was for the facade of the prominent Hourglass in Amsterdam.
Making the seemingly impossible, possible
The construction world is changing rapidly. As market leader in integral assembly solutions within the European high-rise segment, Byldis works on the most high-profile projects. Thanks to an intensive collaboration with Smart Move – an internationally focussed employment intermediary – we are able to make the seemingly impossible, possible.
Finding qualified professionals is an increasingly serious challenge for facade builders and precast companies. Projects, however, are becoming more challenging and complex. Smart Move bridges the gap. “Our connections with over sixty recruitment agencies all over Europe means that we are able to find the right specialists and professionals, fast,” says Daan van Dijk of Smart Move. “Since last year, we have focused exclusively on recruiting professional staff in the field of facade technology and construction.” And this is paying off. “We are thankful to make use of the professional support provided by Smart Move for our Engineering, Prefab and Facades divisions,” says Marcel van Bruggen, project leader of assembly at Byldis.
One of the first projects for which Byldis used the services of Smart Move door was the facade of the striking Hourglass in Amsterdam. “A special building in the shape of a 80-metre high hourglass with an unusually large natural stone facade and narrow seams,” explains Van Bruggen. “The professionals from Smart Move worked on this complex facade, consisting of no less than 583 sandwich elements, 193 columns, 780 aluminium frames, 7 sliding doors and 20 curtain walls.” Van Dijk adds: “A top team of around 15 to 20 people were working on the project on a daily basis. We also had our own foreman on site who managed the other workers and performed quality checks. Of course, there were also weekly meetings between our foreman, project leaders at Byldis Facades and our project coordinator in order to monitor the progress and planning. As well as on location in Amsterdam, our people were (and are) busy working at the Byldis precast production location.”
Smart Move is a true partner for Byldis, in more ways than one. Van Dijk: “By providing support on multiple levels (on location and in the precast factory), our people become more familiar with the work, we can make the necessary (internal) adjustments and provide the very best solutions to the capacity demands of Byldis, while maintaining quality. This is exactly where we want to be going as an organisation: to become an extension and partner, instead of simply a supplier.” Van Bruggen: “That is exactly what we are looking for. There are increasingly high demands on performance and projects are becoming more complex. Qualified personnel is an absolute must. It is therefore also very important that workers receive additional training in time, in order to remain up to date with the constantly changing systems and safety requirements. Smart Move supports us in this.” Van Dijk: “Open and honest communication, elements of Byldis in our training centre and the increased capacity, give us everything we need to continue achieving success, also in the future.”
