1. The project: University of Utrecht Faculty of Sciences
The Utrecht Faculty of Science is renowned worldwide as a driving force in a variety of scientific fields. With over 6000 students and around 1300 employees and researchers, it is the largest faculty of science in the Netherlands. Students attend the faculty for lab work, to receive education and to study. The building in Utrecht is striking. On one side, the faculty is clad with a black shell of polyester concrete with long strip windows. The other side is very transparent. The faculty entrance is accentuated with a large awning.
2. Byldis contribution to this project
Byldis contribution: The supply and assembly of all aluminium facades and plating.
3. Why was Byldis chosen?
The reason why Byldis Facades was chosen for the Utrecht Faculty of Sciences project, comes down to scope and complexity of the project. Byldis Facades has the expertise required for such an undertaking and completed the project successfully.
"Project complexity is suitable for Byldis to execute"
4. Challenges and solutions
Cantilevered, curved facade The challenge for Byldis Facades was primarily the cantilevered, curved facade. In order to achieve this, special project profiles were rolled to the correct radius and curved windows were used. The matching aluminium plating was rolled to size form 5mm thick sheets and fitted with a welded-on suspension construction that was then finished to a high standard. Special glazing with silkscreen printing was used for the strip windows, which also doubled as sun screening. Alucobond facade plating was placed between the windows, with a matching sub-construction.
