1. The project: Het Baken

With its 20 storeys, Het Baken towers above the surrounding buildings of the unicorn area in Amsterdam. The building is home to 130 free-sector rental apartments, with 65 underground parking spaces and is triangular in shape. The two bottom storeys consist of 22 starter’s apartments. Above these are 18 floors, each with 6 apartments. The triangular shape guarantees a great view on every side and lots of natural light. A building you want to live in.

2. Why was Byldis chosen?

Choosing the Byldis total concept meant that Het Baken could be built easier and faster. The facilities such as electricity, ventilation ducts and pipes, were built into the (full) floors back in the factory. All that was needed after assembly was to connect these full floors together. It was therefore possible to pour the floors quickly and then move straight on to the construction of the next storey.

This enabled us to keep our promise of building one storey every week. The speed of construction of our system was hugely advantageous to the client as the project could be completed faster.

"The washed concrete facade gives the building a characteristic and robust appearance."

3. Challenges & solutions

Logistics on the construction site
The logistical movements on the construction site of Het Baken were a significant challenge at the time. Het Baken was being built in the middle of a busy residential neighbourhood. This meant that there was limited space for the build. The 20-storey high tower was assembled using a mobile caterpillar crane.

Assembling and dismantling the mobile crane was also quite a challenge for Byldis, due to the space limitations of the location. The caterpillar crane had to reach 75 metres high, but then also had to be stored on the construction site.

4. Facts & figures

Byldis designed the entire constructive new-build for het Baken, including the supporting sandwich elements. Byldis Facades also supplied the frames and glazing. Together we created Het Baken, a focal point in the city.
