1. The project: Rezoning of Schijndel town hall

The former town hall in Schijndel is a special building. The building was given a cultural repurposing and is now a meeting place on the Schijndel market square. The original 1959 design was by the Amersfoort architect J.C. van Buijtenen. After a thorough renovation, the RAADhuis houses the library, municipal art collection, Tourist Information Point (TIP) and the customer contact centre and civic affairs of the municipality of Meierijstad. The different functions create surprising cross-pollinations, with art as the connecting factor.

An important intervention in the building is the lowering of the former wedding hall floor. This creates a split-level relationship between the basement and the entrance floor. This solution does justice to both the existing architecture and its future use: an open, flexible building where cross-fertilisation and mixing of functions is encouraged. The interior concept reads "wandering from treasure chamber to treasure chamber". It refers to the original room structure in the building and makes its contents the really important thing.
