Poort van Dendermonde

Byldis starts construction of prison in Dendermonde

Byldis has already started engineering work for the Poort van Dendermonde prison. In May we started production of the elements.

For Poort van Dendermonde, we will produce, deliver and assemble the complete hull and around 3500 sandwich facade elements for cell buildings (building C). We will also produce the floors, walls and columns. In total about 3500 elements are made for this project.

Poort van Dendermonde

Poort van Dendermonde will be a prison for 444 male detainees at the Oud Klooster (Old Monastery) in Dendermonde, near Antwerp. The concept of the prison is innovative and in line with an evolving vision of detention facilities. This vision focuses on preparing the detainees for reintegration into society. The cell wings are spatially laid out, so that the guards have an overview of all cell doors at a glance. The prison has the appearance of a whole, but at the same time the individual functions remain separate. This contributes to a good sense of orientation and stimulates a feeling of community. The building will cover a total area of around 31,500 m².

Why was Byldis chosen?

The reason why a precast solution was chosen with the Byldis system is that precast concrete is a high quality and sustainable material. The use of prefabricated elements also mean that the cell building can be built in a short space of time, around one year from production to completion. This significantly reduces the construction time in relation to traditional construction methods.

Challenges & solutions

The short construction time means that the assembly of the cell building must be carefully coordinated with the construction phases of the other buildings, as the construction flows of the other buildings influence the construction planning of the cell building. We can solve this challenge by working closely with the other contractors and fine-tuning during the construction process.

Completion

It is expected that we will complete Poort van Dendermonde 2021. The prison is scheduled to open in 2022.
