Project: The Veerhuis
Het Veerhuis in Rotterdam, a historic and iconic building from 1918, has been revived after years of decay and imminent demolition. Originally it served as a shipping shed and living quarters for the nearby garden village. Thanks to the efforts of the Droom en Daad Foundation, the building has been restored to its full glory and is now transforming into a vibrant cultural venue. The Veerhuis Foundation is establishing a writing house here where creativity, meeting and inspiration come together. The doors will open in the Autumn of 2025.
Commissioned by the Dutch heritage expert, Nico de Bont, we have designed, manufactured and installed a new high-quality architectural precast concrete facade. What is unique, is that, not only was the embodied CO₂ reduced in our panels, this is a secondary benefit of the innovative material. The primary benefit of the material developed by Peabbl was to store CO2 captured from the air in industrial areas. So by the time the material for our project came to us it has already captured 275kg of CO₂ from the air. This innovation is an important step forward, but certainly not our end point. At Byldis, we continue to invest, test and push boundaries towards a sustainable future. More developments will follow and we look forward to sharing them with you soon.
Byldis puts sustainability into action!
At Byldis, sustainability is in our DNA. Together with the materials innovator, Peabbl, we developed a new low carbon concrete mix that permanently stores CO₂. Independent verification has confirmed that with this innovation our concrete panels have 42% less embodied CO₂ than they would have with conventional CEM I concrete. This has been achieved without compromising on performance, safety and aesthetics.
This breakthrough shows what we can achieve with our own R&D and underlines our commitment to innovative solutions that make real contributions to a more sustainable building sector.
✅ 42% reduction in CO₂ emissions
✅ Carbon mineralisation permanently locks CO₂ into the material,
✅ Internally developed by Byldis, in partnership with Peabbl
✅ Offsite manufacture with minimal waste, energy efficiency and speed
✅ Attractive architectural façade
✅ The façade panels are 100% recyclable and reusable at the end of its life on this building
✅ No compromise on the performance, safety and aesthetics of the concrete
