1. The project: ESS Lund in Sweden

ESS Lund, the European Spallation Source, is a multidisciplinary research facility in Lund, Sweden. The aim of this facility is to build and operate the most powerful neutron source in the world. The centre will carry out research into materials, energy, healthcare and the environment, and will tackle some of the most important societal problems of our time. The facility thus hopes to make scientific breakthroughs possible. In the Netherlands, many research activities can benefit enormously from participating in the ESS, especially in the fields of biotechnology, materials science, magnetism, nanotechnology, cultural heritage and chemistry. The ESS Lund campus is home to facilities including laboratories, offices and a lecture hall.

2. Byldis contribution to this project

Byldis contribution: Byldis supplied different kinds of concrete elements, such as walls, floors and stairways.

3. Why was Byldis chosen?

Severfield Europe BV, a steel fabricator in England for who we work as subcontractor, commissioned Byldis to produce, supply and install various kinds of precast concrete elements including concrete walls, hollow core slab floors, concrete stairways, wide slab floors and hollow walls. Byldis was able to comply with the rules that apply on the construction site. Severfield has a contract with Skanska, the main contractor of the project.

"Byldis complies with the rules that apply on the construction site in Sweden."

4. Challenges & solutions

Engineering in a new region
A challenge for Byldis at ESS Lund was the engineering that had to be completed in an entirely new (and unfamiliar) region. We also had to comply with certain demands applying to the process as a whole, from engineering to delivery. Not only did the elements have to meet certain demands, but also the whole quality dossier, including internal and external inspections and certification. This cost a huge amount of time but was ultimately successful as we adjusted the organisation to suit the requirements.
